Arkansas Anglers Catch 109 Pound, 15 Ounce Blue Catfish in Mississippi River

The AGFC Fisheries Division reports that two anglers were fishing the Mississippi River near Mellwood in Phillips County last Sunday when they caught a catfish weighing 109 pounds, 15 ounces. That’s just shy of the current Arkansas record of 116 pounds, 12 ounces caught on the Mississippi River in 2001. Mark Lumpkin was fishing with Jackie Swindle when Mark, using rod and reel, hooked the fish around 1 p.m., and two and a half hours later, they’d finally gotten the fish into the boat.

Some 30,000 catfish are being distributed in many community ponds around Arkansas, to coincide with both Arkansas Hunting and Fishing Week (Sept. 19-26) and National Hunting and Fishing Day (Sept. 26). Also, more catfish than normal stockings (about 50 percent more at each site) are being distributed as we write into the 47 Family and Community Fishing Program ponds around the state, with 10 channel catfish at each site being tagged with a green wire tag (which has the phone number to call if you catch a tagged fish) that will win a lucky angler a fishing prize. Everybody catching a tagged fish gets a prize and automatic entry into a drawing in which three people will win half-day guided fishing trips on Beaver Lake. Find an FCFP pond near you to catch a fish. Even if it’s not tagged, all the catfish being stocked throughout Arkansas this month are ready for the table and dinnertime. The FCFP catfish promotion runs from now until Oct. 31
