Browning X-Bolt Max Varmint/Target

The Browning X-Bolt Max Varmint/Target was announced at SHOT Show 2019 as a show special. The new Max stock is what sets it apart from other rifles in Browning’s X-Bolt series.

Max Stock

The Browning Max stock features adjustable comb, LOP spacers, vertical pistol grip, and fore-end rail. The adjustable comb allows the shooter to dial-in the fit of the rifle to optimize eye-to-scope alignment. The included stock spacers fit between the Inflex Technology recoil pad and the stock to adjust the length of pull. A fore-end mounted Picatinny rail provides a secure location for a bipod and includes an integrated mount for a sling swivel. Adding to the target aspect of the rifle, the bottom of the stock is flat for better stability on shooting platforms or bags. Lastly, the matte black finish reduces glare for the shooter or any sharp-eyed coyotes or prairie dogs.

X-Bolt Features

The X-Bolt Max is free-floated by bedding the front and rear of the action. A match-grade stainless steel bull barrel is fluted and threaded. The muzzle brake acts as a thread protector and helps reduce recoil. All seven calibers of the X-Blot Max feature 26″ barrels.

For scope mounting, the rifle features Browning’s X-Lock system, which uses four screws per base, replacing the traditional two-screw system. This allows for a more accurate placement of the bases on the receiver.

The Browning X-Bolt Max Varmint/Target has an oversized bolt to allow for manipulation with gloves. The Max Varmint/Target incorporates Browning’s short  60° bolt lift that has been a mainstay on Browning rifles for decades.

A very unique feature of the X-Bolt models is the bolt unlock button. The bolt unlock button works in conjunction with the top-tang safety to provide an added measure of safety during checking and unloading of the chamber. Located on top of the bolt lever, the bolt unlock button allows the bolt to be unlocked and opened with the safety in the on safe position. The safety blocks the trigger sear and features a firing pin block for added safety.

The polymer X-Bolt magazines are rotary style, meaning the cartridges make a circular path as they move from the bottom of the magazine to the top position. The advantage of this style is that the round is presented in the middle of the magazine instead of being offset. This makes for easier and faster loading. The magazine is flush fitting to avoid snagging on gear or clothing.

Lastly, the X-Bolt’s three-lever Feather Trigger provides a clean, crisp pull with no take-up or creep and minimal overtravel. The trigger is screw adjustable from 3 to 5 lbs. and factory preset at approximately 3 1/2 lbs.

The Browning X-Bolt Max Varmint/Target is available in 7 calibers which are 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, 22-250, 6.5 Creedmoor, 308 Win, 28 Nosler, and 300 Win Mag. The MSRP of $1,339.99 to $1,399.99 depends on caliber.
