Ditch the Anti-Walk Pins: Elf Tactical’s New PRO-LOCK Mounting System

I don’t think many will dispute the claim that there has never been a firearm platform that has evolved at anywhere near the pace of the AR15 platform. Every part, down to the bolt catch roll pin, has been reimagined. And occasionally, an innovative solution leaves you asking the question, “Why didn’t I think of that?”.

Elftmann Tactical, known for high-end AR15 trigger solutions, recently debuted a product that left me asking that very question.

No More Anti-Walk Pins

The drop-in trigger is arguably one of the best upgrades you can make to a trigger. There are countless variations on the market, from dozens of manufacturers. The drop-in triggers have always had an Achilles heel, though. They require “anti-walk” pins to prevent the hammer or trigger pin from “walking” back out of the receiver side. This is due to the drop-in system being largely enclosed and not leveraging the hammer/trigger springs to lock in the pins.

Anti-walk pins take many forms but generally consist of a hollow, threaded pin, installed through the hammer and trigger pin channels, with small screws that affix outside of the receiver. Coupled with a few dabs of blue Loctite, this will secure a drop-in trigger and prevent failures associated with walking pins.

Many trigger manufacturers have attempted to solve the pin walk problem by incorporating small set screws into the bottom of the trigger assembly. Once properly torqued, these screws put upward pressure on the hammer and trigger pins. This certainly helps, but should also be paired with anti-walk pins for a rock-solid lockup.

ELF PRO-LOCK Threaded Mounting System

Elftmann Tactical applied this solution to their popular, adjustable Elf Match Pro trigger, as well as the Elf Pro component trigger, both available in either a flat bow or traditional curved bow variation. I’m betting they will integrate this solution into their entire lineup over time.

The solution didn’t stop there, though. Elftmann also included the bottom set screws on the drop-in version, effectively providing six points of contact with the receiver.

It’s brilliant in its simplicity. Too often, solutions overcomplicate a straightforward problem. Not here. My only criticism would be the head on the screws. It’s minor, but in my opinion, they’re too large and should be reduced for a lower profile look.

According to reps at Elftmann Tactical, we also understand that they have patented this solution. Does that prevent other manufacturers from adopting other flavors of this solution? Time will tell, but I love the thought process here and the overall direction that aftermarket triggers are traveling.
