Don’t Overlook The Need For A Good Fishing Net

I regretted not bringing a fishing net. My wife and I had been moving slowly around the lake. We were relaxing, enjoying one of the day soaking up a little sun and enjoying the sights.

I had a fishing line in the water, trolling as we moved along. But I had brought minimal gear: one rod and reel combo and a small container of plastic pan fish lures. Fishing was secondary on this day. At first.

If I’d Only Brought A Fishing Net

When I unexpectedly started getting strike after strike, I began to take notice. On a day I really wasn’t serious about fishing, the fishing was seriously good. The problem is that I hadn’t brought a net. As a result, I lost a few fish that wiggled loose right at the boat.

Fishing nets are one of the most underrated and overlooked pieces of gear in an angler’s arsenal. A net can make or break a day on the water. If you’re in a competition, it can mean the difference between winning and losing a big tournament.

Frabill Has Some Handy Nets

Frabill, a company based in Grand Prairie, Texas, has a line of fishing nets worth considering. Called Trophy Haul, these nets can help you to complete your catch.

These nets come in three styles:  the Standard Trophy Haul; the Power Extend; and the Bear Claw. Each is constructed from anodized stainless steel able to withstand use in both fresh and saltwater.

These Frabill nets have several features that help to make landing a fish more of a sure thing. First, they make use of Frabill’s patented conservation netting. And their Lockdown asymmetrical design provides better control of the fish. Once landed the fish makes it way down a gradual slope to the flat bottom of the net. Nets in the Trophy Haul series also feature an innovative yoke handle that makes the net easier to balance and control under the weight of the fish.

Each Trophy Haul series net comes complete with a control ring on the bottom of each net bag. This ingenious feature allows anglers to maintain the utmost control of the bag during landing. While maintaining control of the ring, anglers can guide their net past obstructions in the direct vicinity, such as rod handles and cleats with ease.

Standard Trophy Haul

The Standard Trophy Haul has a triangular handle that gives anglers total control. The handle will not turn, spin or slip no matter how much the fish thrashes.

A large Power Grip yoke handle at the rear of the hoop helps anglers finish the job, providing extra grip while swinging your catch into the boat.

The Standard Trophy Haul is available in three hoop sizes: 18″x21″, 21″x24″, and 24″x27.” The MSRP for the Standard Trophy Haul is $99.99.

The Power Extend Net

Frabill’s Power Extend has all the amenities you need. It’s offered in three hoop sizes. As the name implies, the Power Extend features a handle that extends from three to six feet. Simply push the one-touch extension button mid-handle, and the net will extend on its own, an excellent feature for landing large fish while out on the water alone.

For fishing in low light, the Power Extend comes equipped with three Net Vision LEDs. The LED’s are programmed to power down on their own after being idle for five minutes. The Power Extend has reflective material on the mesh guard of the hoop that, with the LEDs, makes it easy to see exactly where the net is in the water. The MSRP for the Power Extend is $159.99.

The Bear Claw

Frabill’s Bear Claw is perfect when you’re fishing alone, especially when fishing in a small craft or from shore. Utilizing a scooping motion, the Bear Claw will enable anglers to land their catch with a rod in one hand and net in the other, just like a grizzly bear plucking trout from a mountain stream.

The Bear Claw is lightweight and packable with a handle that folds quickly for carrying and deploys rapidly when you have a fish on. A forearm support and sliding grip allow the Bear Claw to fit most anglers. The Bear Claw is available in two versions: Standard and the Net Vision lighted version, both featuring a 14″x18″ hoop. The MSRP for the Bear Claw is $79.99.
