Manticore Arms Afterburner Review

The Duality of Manticore

As someone who loves full-powered SBRs, linear compensators like the Manticore Afterburner are my best friend.

Not only do the substantially reduce felt recoil, they divert an enormous amount of the muzzle blast away from the shooter. But what about the shooter who wants the efficacy of the linear comp but still wants flash reduction or further recoil reduction? That’s where the Manticore Arms Afterburner comes in.

The afterburner is a deceptively simple-looking device that in its basic form resembles a miniature conical flash-hider. It’s currently available in 1/2×28 thread pitch with an inner diameter large enough for 9mm rounds.

This means the Afterburner can be safely installed on 5.56mm carbines and 9mm firearms as well. In my personal experience, it’s a blast to run on SBRs, as well as large format pistols like the MP5, the PSa AKv 9mm or CZ Scorpion EVO.

It’s only once a shooter installs one of the two available tips, that the Afterburner name starts to make sense. Yes, it indeed looks like the Afterburner thrusts on an F-14 Tomcat.  But more than simply look cool, the Afterburner tips greatly increase the versatility of the muzzle brake.

Compensating?

For instance, the compensating tip obliterates the majority of muzzle rise from any firearm it’s mounted on. I tested the Afterburner with comp on an IO Inc AR pistol with a seven inch barrel.  The results were brilliant – literally.

The muzzle blast was enormous and momentarily blinding. And while the noise from the blast was still incredibly loud, it was less so at the shooter’s ear thanks to the linear design dissipating it forward.

Flashy Design

The second tip shooters can install on their afterburner, is a three-prong flash hider. Using the same thread pitch as the compensator, the three-prong flash hider definitely makes a substantial difference in the muzzle flash on short barreled rifles.

While the total volume of hot expanding gasses is the same, it releases them more gradually and in a controlled pattern.

In testing, the flash hider did an admirable job reducing the flash signature on both rifle caliber pistols, and handgun versions of SMGS. Though if I were limited to buying one or the other, I would opt for the compensator.

That said, overall the Manticore Arms Afterburner is one of my all time favorite muzzle devices for compact firearms. It gives shooter’s the increased comfort of a linear compensator, with the added functionality of an aggressive brake and flash hider. For more information, visit https://manticorearms.com/
